The UFC has announced several matches for the UFC on FOX 7 event scheduled for April 20th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. The event is headlined by STRIKEFORCE Champion Gilbert Melendez‘ challenge for the UFC Lightweight title of Benson Henderson. SF had carved a niche for itself in the San Jose area where they were based, so not it is not a suprise to see the card heavy on SF talent. Of particular interest is the Nate Diaz versus Josh Thomson matchup, but the card is packed throughout.
Nate Diaz will likely be favored against Josh Thomson, but you never know what can happen in these pseudo grudge fights, and Thomson is a high skill competitor. The two men don’t hate each other, but Thomson has faced Melendez in 3 tension filled fights, and Diaz was part of the camps that prepared Gilbert, so Diaz knows Thomson very well. This will look and feel like a grudge match.
On the undercard, also from SF, is Lightweight Jorge Masvidal, who takes on 2x UFC veteran Tim Means. Means won impressively by KO in his last outing against Justin Salas, overwhelmiing him with knees and punches. This is unlikely to work on Masvidal, who wants a stand up fight where he can use his boxing and kickboxing. Masvidal has kept up a much higher level of competition over the course of his career than Means, and it is that experience that should carry the day.
Another interesting undercard fight pits SF’s Roger Bowling against Anthony Njokuani. Njokuani is 4-3 in his UFC career, and coming off a loss, so he will be looking to impress and stay on with the UFC. I look for Njokuani to be too experienced for Bowling.
Of course, the odds for Henderson and Melendez are out, with Henderson -220 favored over Melendez, who come back at +170. Daniel Comrier is favored -400 over Frank Mir, wit hthe comeback on Mir at +300. More to come on this card as the sportsbooks start to release more lines for the rest of the fights.
