Jon Anik ran the festivities today at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha Nebraska, where the weigh ins for tomorrow night’s ‘UFC on FUEL TV 1′ event. Overall, none of the fighters had trouble making their weights, and all systems are go. This is the first UFC event to air on the FUEL TV affiliate and they have six fights scheduled to air, which is another positive and noteworthy development. Main event fighters Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez matched each other’s intensity, but everyone played it professional and safe.
So my initial bet of Ellenberger holds. Unless there is some type of fluke, I am convinced Ellenberger is going to win this fight. He is well conditioned, aggressive and has KO power. Though it looked like Diego was in great shape at 170 and that Sanchez may have a reach advantage, Ellenberger is still the bigger athlete and he will probably be at least 185 lbs for the fight.
The makeover of the night goes to Dave Herman, who came in with a completely new look for this fight. The normally clean cut, blonde fighter now sports a full beard and back hair. He faces Stefan Struve in a heavyweight fight, and I hope Struve trained for a rash guard, as the new, hairy Herman looks more like Johny Hendricks now than Dave Herman. I am picking Herman in this one, as his record is filled with KOs and TKOs, and Struve has proven susceptible to being hit.
The two matches I am most excited to see are the bouts between T.J. Dillashaw and Walel Watson, and John Albert taking on Ivan Menjivar in the 135 lb division. It is exciting to see the new weight class developing talent.
I like what Walel ‘The Gazelle’ brings to the table in terms of length and edges, it is hard to train for a guy like that, and I think TJ Dillashaw has his work cut out for him in that bout.
Though Albert gets a lot of props and seems to have a lot of potential, I am going to pick the old school Ivan Menjivar in this one. Menjivar has been around for a long time, and has faced a lot of top talent at up to 155 lbs. He looked fit at 135 lbs, and he is very talented. I may be picking this one more with my heart, but here is to thinking that Menjivar has found the right weight class for himself! See you after the fights!
