UFC on FUEL TV 2 – Looking At Brian Stann vs Alessio Sakara

Brian Stann

UFC Middleweight Brian Stann has a chance to keep moving up the rankings ladder tomorrow.

One of the bouts that bears watching on the main card of tomorrow’s ‘UFC on FUEL TV 2′ card that airs tomorrow all the way from Stockholm, Sweden is the Middleweight tilt between Alessio Sakara and Brian Stann.  One look at the lines for this bout as they stand heading into fight day, and you know that Stann is a huge favorite at -400, with the comeback on Alessio at +300.  Stann dropped his last fight against top contender Chael Sonnen, but he was on a 3 fight win streak where he didn’t have to go the distance with any of his opponents.  Alessio brings a similar resume into the bout, having lost his last bout to up and coming Chris Weidman, but winning three in a row prior to that.  With those similarities in resume, why is the line so high?  Let’s take a look.

On paper most assume, this is a bad stylistic match up for Alessio.  That may not be the case however.

Stann is heavy handed, as evidenced by a lot of KO and TKO wins earlier in his career, and he is big and strong at 185 lbs.  He is also receiving a lot of high level training with Greg Jackson, so it is safe to assume he will come in with a gameplan.

Sakara is not a bad stand up fighter, I liken him to a poor man’s Patrick Cote.  Though he doesn’t want to get hit by Stann, his stand up game may be more polished than the American’s.

Stann gets a lot of credit for his focus and his mental strength, and deservedly so.  If Sakara is at the top of his game however, he has some of those same characteristics as Stann.  Early in his career, Sakara lived in Brazil, taking fights with any organization he could.  He fought heavyweights if he had to, including Roman Zentsov and Assuerio Silva, both very hard true heavyweight sluggers.

It is hard to be critical of Stann, who is a tough guy and a good guy type, but the hype around him has people forgetting that he is going against a guy with a lot more experience than he does.  Stann won a medal in the military for standing in during a firefight.  Not to make light of that achievement, but if it is a firefight he wants, Sakara will give him one.  And in a firefight, Sakara does have a chance.
