Clay “The Carpenter” Guida and Gray “The Bully” Maynard will be facing off Friday, June 22th at 6PM/9PM PT/ET. This will be an intense battle as both of these guys are coming from losses and are definitely going to be giving their all to get back to the top. This is a main card event and will be scheduled for 5 rounds. You can catch these lightweight contenders battling head-to-head on FX. It will be interesting to see if Guida can submit Maynard who has no submission losses or if Gray can KO Clay who has no KO losses.
The BetDSI MMA odds (listed below) have Clay Guida as the underdog. Guida is looking to get back on his feet after a decision loss to the current champion Benson Henderson and Maynard has been out of the MMA world since October when he was TKO’d by then-champ Frankie Edgar.
Clay Guida +265
Gray Maynard -325
How Gray Maynard Stacks Up
Maynard has changed up his workout routine since the last time we saw him fight, so it’ll be interesting to see how he has improved as a fighter. Maynard is a more dynamic striker than Guida and has a 1 inch reach advantage. He is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has always been on the top of his game as a wrestler in his division. Maynard has powerful punches, but despite his brute strength, he only has two KO wins under his belt.
How Clay Guida Stacks Up
Guida no doubt is a fan favorite. He has great pace and doesn’t allow his opponent to ever rest. In previous fights, he showed amazing cardio and skillful footwork. Clay has 4 KO wins on his resume and he has never been knocked out before. Guida also outperforms Maynard in KO wins, submission wins and has never been KO’d. He has 15 submission wins while Maynard only has one.
Just by observing the Clay’s fights against Benson Henderson and Diego Sanchez you can see that Guida has struggled with wrestlers in the past. Maynard’s wrestling, brute strength, and his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu give him the big edge over Guida. With that being said, Maynard slows down after the 2nd round so Guida may have the advantage starting from round 3. This can be the advantage Guida would need to finish the fight or score enough points for a decision win. Guida is well rounded fighter and is more experienced than Maynard, but Maynard shows promising advantages that make him my winning pick.
