This coming weekend on December 3rd, the UFC wraps up season 14 of their reality show ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ with a card main evented by the coaches, Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping and Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller. The undercard features a lightweight fight between veteran Yves Edwards against ‘TUF’ season 13 winner Tony Ferguson. Though Edwards enjoys a wide advantage in experience, Ferguson has been on a roll.
This blog is not about picking a winner, I’m thinking it will be a competitive fight. It is because every time I see the name Yves Edwards on an MMA card, I always get to thinking about Yves’ career and why he is not more popular among MMA fans.
Edwards has been around for a long time, and he gets all the points in the world for being a nice guy and easy to work with. There have been times where he lost a fight at a bad time career-wise, but his highlight reels are something to behold. Check these two videos below.
The big knee KO’s James Berto.
Nothing like a kick to the neck to make you wobbly, just ask Josh Thompson!
I don’t think a discussion can be had about the best strikers in MMA without including Yves Edwards. His boxing is very skilled and polished, and his kicks and knees have always been lethal, as illustrated above.
I remember seeing Yves fight live in Evansville, Indiana way back in the old HOOKnSHOOT days. The crowd was trickling into the old War Memorial, and it was cold. The heating system seemed to be having trouble getting started, as a constant bang bang bang sound was coming up through the pipes. You could hear a buzz go through the crowd as they wondered what the banging was. It was loud. Turns out that the banging sound was Yves Edwards, who was in the basement of the arena warming up kicking pads. The sound resonated throughout the building, which seats about 5000.
Like I said, I’m not sure what will happen in this bout with Tony Ferguson, but with Yves Edwards, a highlight reel could happen at any moment, so don’t blink!
