Washington Capitals Attempt To Stay In Wild Card Race Take On Mets

Every game is important for the Washington Capitals who are trying to stay in the race for a Wild Card Spot. Washington is currently 6.5 games behind a wild card berth and have been playing great in trying to secure their spot in the post-season of late with a 8-2 record over their last 10 games.

Currently sporting a 68-66 record the Washington Capitals are not dominating the division like they did last year but are surging of late to try and make a run for the post-season. On the mound for the Capitals in this match-up against the Mets will be Dan Haren who is 8-11 on the season with a 4.66 ERA. Haren has been pitching well as of late as in his last ten starts only allowed more than two runs over 5+ innings just twice registering a 4-2 record with a 2.53 ERA and a save.

The offense waking up in a big way is a major reason for the Capitals surge late in the season with four batters hitting over .300 in the last 7 games and ten team total home runs over the same span has certainly helped. To say Ian Desmond has been on fire would be an understatement as the short stop is batting .400 with 3 home runs, 8 RBI’s, and 2 stolen bases over the past seven games. Center fielder Denard Span has been hitting solid with a .391 average, 1 home run , 1 RBI, 3 walks over the past seven, and left Fielder Bryce Harper has also been killing the ball with a .375 average, 2 home runs, and 6 RBI’s the past week.

The New York Mets are too buried being 13 games behind a wild card berth to think about the playoffs , but this does not mean they will be an easy match for the Capitals as their starting pitcher for this contest Mark Wheeler has been pitching great. Wheeler is 5-2 with a 2.98 ERA over his last 10 starts allowing just 20 earned runs over 60 innings. On the season the young Mark Wheeler is 6-3 with a 3.42 ERA and certainly is poised for a bright future.

Lacking a consistent offense over the past week has been trouble for the Mets as they try to finish off the season on a high note. Second baseman Daniel Murphy has been catching fire the past week hitting .370 with 4 RBI’s. Apart from Murphy the only other player to provide some consistent hitting has been right fielder Andrew Brown who is batting .300 with a homer and 5 RBI’s over his last seven games.

The Washington Capitals need to keep winning with every game so vital to their playoff hopes and Mark Wheeler will be no easy contest in this one against the New York Mets. I like them in this match-up having caught fire and playing great ball , but I do not like the price against such a solid pitcher in Wheeler. Take the Mets with the great price on a solid young pitcher who has been putting in some great games of late.
