Much has been made about the UFC’s successful debut of women’s MMA under their flag this month with the Ronda Rousey vs Liz Carmouche headline match at UFC 157, and everyone in that equation deserves credit for making it a success. But women’s MMA has been around in the states since the start of the century, and at this time, a group running shows in the midwest called INVICTA FC is doing their fifth all women’s MMA card on April 5th at the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, MO. It is a 14 match show, co-headlined by Jessica Penne‘s Atomweight title defense against Michelle Waterson and Vanessa Porto facing Barb Honchak for the INVICTA FC Flyweight Championship.

This is INVICTA FC’s biggest show to date, as they ran their first event in April of last year and have 4 well produced, exciting shows under their belts. They are a small production, and at this point it is not clear if they will be working with the UFC, or if the UFC will ignore them or buy them – any one of those paths could happen in the long term.
But for the short term, the INVICTA 5 is a top notch card. Aside from the two title matches, the big news is the MMA Invicta debut of Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos as she takes on tough Ediane Gomes. No chance really for Gomes but the slimmest, as ‘Cyborg’ starts her road to a showdown with Rousey.
Jessica Penne vs Michelle Waterson for the Atomweight title is a very interesting match. The match is at 105 lbs, and the matches at that weight have been action packed. It is hard to see this line coming in too far apart, though Penne will be favored. Invicta is exploring a new weight class here for the ladies, something the UFC should look at.
The Flyweight title fight between Vanessa Porto and Barb Honchak is a pick ‘em type fight, as both women have solid experience and have netted wins over quality opposition in their MMA careers. Porto has gone the full five rounds once before in her MMA career, but the championships rounds of 4 and 5 are not on Honchak’s resume. IT will be interseting to see if she tires as the fight goes deep.
The show can be seen at the www.invictafc.com website, so tune in for INVICTA 5 and start getting to know the talent on the women’s scene. I’ll bet you will be glad you got in early.
