The all women’s MMA promotion INVICTA returns with their 5th offering on April 5th at the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri. Two titles will be at stake, as atomweight champion Jessica Penne defends her title against Michelle Waterson, and Vanessa Porto takes on Barb Honchak to crown the first ever Flyweight titlist for the organization. The complete card has 14 fights scheduled and is packed with a ton of talent. The big draw, of course, is the return of Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos to MMA after a suspension. Let’s look at what the lines may look like when they open at the sports books.
What were the odds for Rousey-Carmouche? Rousey was a -800 to -1200 favorite out there. Well, take those odds and duplicate them for the “Cyborg’ Santos versus Fiona Muxlow match. Credit goes to Muxley for stepping up on short notice to take on Santos, who is considered the future nemesis and rival of Ronda Rousey. Despite her long lay off due to a suspension, Santos is expected to pick up where she left off in terms of dominance.
The match between Porto and Honchak should be a good one. Honchak is on a six fight winning streak since the start of 2011, and this will be her third fight for INVICTA. Look for Honchak to be favored, as Porto looked a bit flat against a fading Tara LaRosa in her last outing, and she lost to Sarah D’Alelio prior to that.
In the atomweight title match, look for champion Jessica Penne to be favored over Michelle Waterson. The match will be fast paced and extremely competitive, however Penne has really displayed some skill that will see her mentioned on pound for pound lists for women’s MMA (if the sport keeps growing, they are not far off).
Also on the card is 15-2 Sara Kaufman, who was last seen in August of 2012 serving her arm up as Ronda Rousey’s latest victim. Kaufman takes on Leslie Smith in a match that should see Kaufman favored. Kaufman’s skill and experience should be too much for Smith, as Kaufman tries to gt back on track and in the title picture. Smith is a tough customer who is used to long grinding fights, but the experience and skill difference weigh heavily in Kaufman’s favor.
Invicta has been a solid product from it’s inception, and they deserve support. The event will be broadcast for online PPV – check www.invictafc.com for details!
