Yankees Host Orioles For An Extremely Important Game For Both Teams
The New York Yankees host the Baltimore Orioles today in an extremely important game for both teams as they are both so close to a wild card berth. Oakland currently holds the wild card spot while the rest of the AL couldn’t be closer as the Orioles are 4 games back, the Yankees 4.5, and the Indians also just 4.5 games behind. This could get interesting and this match-up could be huge for either of these teams in trying to get to the post-season.
The Yankees have been playing some fine ball of late to get themselves in the wild card race and tonight have one of their best pitchers taking the mound in Ivan Nova. This season Nova is 7-4 with a 3.14 ERA and has been even better the past 10 visits to the mound as in that time he is 5-2 with a 2.41 ERA over 71 innings pitched.
The bats have awoke in NY as four batters for the Yankees are hitting above .300 the past seven days with 8 team total home runs in that span. First Baseman Mark Reynolds has been seeing beach balls hitting .474 with a home run and three RBI’s the past week. Robinson Cano has also been on a tear hitting .375 with a homer and 5 RBI’s and Alfonso Soriano has been crushing the ball with 3 home runs and 6 RBI’s the past week.
The Orioles are 4-6 over their past ten games so it is very important for them to stop the slide now and stay right in this wild card race. Scott Feldman will be taking the mound for the Orioles and he has pitched well this season. Feldman is 11-9 with a 3.87 ERA on the year and has allowed just a total 4 earned runs in 17 innings over his last three starts.
Baltimore has some hitters putting in work with third basemen Danny Valencia and Manny Machado both hitting over .300 the past week. The Orioles have a total of seven players having hit a home run the past seven days with Machado leading the team with 7 RBI’s. First baseman slugger Chris Davis continues to produce with 5 RBI’s over his last 22 at bats but he has dipped in average as he’s hitting just .273 and struck out 6 times over that span.
Both teams are in need for a desperate win so this will certainly make for a fun match-up. I like the New York Yankees at home who will be putting a better pitcher on the mound with an offense that has been more productive than the Orioles as of late.
